Some of the highlights from Maureen’s workshop
Todd Raphael October 17, 2007 10:52 am ET
From Maureen Sharib’s sourcing (particularly phone sourcing) workshop …
Studies show “the average recruiter spends less than 10% of their time sourcing, and I’d suggest [the reality is] even less … I promise you if you can make the time to do it one day a week, within two months you will have very strong pipelines.”
Good sourcers may be quiet, and good listeners. Twenty-five percent of the population are introverts — and these tend to make the best telephone names sourcers. These are people, she says, who can engage socially and are good conversationalists, but need some alone time to recharge.
Good sourcers “dream of ways to get into companies.”
She likes Hoovers, but seems wary of ZoomInfo because of accuracy issues (an attendee disagrees, saying that she feels that ZoomInfo is about 95% accurate).
Suggests *67 if needed to block numbers when calling, or purchasing “call block” from a phone company.
Out of 10 names:
–1-2 will be looking now,
–3-5 will listen to you immediately,
–3-5 will be interested in listening to you later
–1 won’t be interested.

The new face of Diversity.com - A Contest.

We are planning a major revamp of Diversity.com in ‘08. We would like your ideas and recommendations for designing a new site with newer - in demand service offerings for employers and job seekers.
Here’s our offer. Please share your thoughts with us now through Thursday 10/18/07 and we will award a “chair” at the ERE EXPO Charity Poker Event to the person with either the best set of ideas and/or whose comments get the highest praise from others. The “catch” is you have to be at the event to receive the prize. Runner ups will receive a set of bongo drums.. Yep, every recruiter should have a set - great way to relieve frustrations at the end of the day.
All comments will be appreciated but here are a few questions we would like to have addressed if possible.
1: If there were no diversity niche job boards were would employers advertise?
2: If paying for specific job positions were eliminated would employers buy annual unlimited posting/resume search memberships?
3:We think retaining resumes are more liability than worth..we think offering social networking would be better?
4: Diversity is no longer the code word for racial uniqueness..we live in a multi-cultural universe. Employers who are still seeking “minority” applicants cause me severe headaches! . These companies are truly lost souls. What are some ways to attract a broader base of multi-cultural,ability and life style job seekers?
5: We think there is a market for diversity recruiting in the UK and Canada. Do you?
6: The new Diversity.com will need sources of income to survive : what services should we offer to help keep the lights on!
7: If you were charged with finding the right web designer who would it be? why?
Telephone Names Sourcing Workshop
msharib October 10, 2007 8:25 am ET
Hi,
I’m going to be presenting “MagicMethod”on Wednesday the 17th at 10am and I think there are 30+ signed up. I’m printing 50 WorkBooks because Amy said these things usually have last minute sign-ups. Here’s what I want to know as I powder my nose:
What is it you’d especially like to know about?
I’m bringing the specially produced videos that cover a real-time sourcing job - if you want to see the Trailer go here: http://tinyurl.com/3×8sym
I’m also bringing another video that conveys a real-time (very naughty) ruse call so you can see it in action. I’m undecided if I will show that, though, as it is very, very, naughty! You’ll have to convince me by clamoring for it.
;)
I also have a video on how to do a telephone “bank” and it’s not that exciting (if you ask me) but you might find it interesting. The other two videos, though, I promise, are riveting!
For those of you who will be in attendance, fair warning. We have three hours and a lot to cover. We don’t have time to argue about the propriety of telephone names sourcing. If you can’t stand hot kitchens, don’t come. The last seminar I did (in Austin last month) went 75 minutes PAST the first scheduled break because they just didn’t want to stop. It was my fault- I should have had better audience control! Hopefully, I learned from that mistake.
Fair warning - go to the bathroom before class.
In an effort to be able to present as much information as possible, I ask you to submit some of your questions NOW so that we can address them in class. I know you’ll have questions in class and that’s okay. But if there’s anything you’d ESPECIALLY like to see me cover, or you’re wondering about, ask it here so I can prepare. I might even answer some of them in here.
Thanks! See you on Wednesday, October 16 in DC!
There’s still room - register for my October 16 Workshop at ERE’s Fall Expo in D.C.: Telephone Names Sourcing: What Is It and Why You Need To Do It - Go here:
http://www.ere.net/events/2007/fall/ataglance.asp
to read all about it! Questions? Contact amy@ere.net or call her direct at 360-264-5627 or also at 212-671-1181 x813 Use discount code of DC07SP (case sensitive) to receive a $200 discount off the conference registration cost.
It’s time to advance your sourcing skills. Think beyond. Take the original and only-of-its-kind telephone names sourcing course “The Magic in the Method”.

Recruiting Gamers

I am really looking forward to sharing our innovative recuiting game entitled “Job of Honor” with all of you. As an “old dog” in the recruiting world, it is really energizing to get to do something new and ground-breaking for a change. If you have been waiting to see what next generation recruiting tools might look like, I believe this may be one of them.
See you in DC!

Looking forward to attending conference
Khanh October 2, 2007 5:09 pm ET
I have attended many, many conferences over my lifetime. Some were great and some were bad. The thing they all have in common is the camaraderie that they all foster. I always walk away from these conferences in the past with tons of business cards, memories of impromptu discussion at lunch tables, and interesting comments we all make about the keynote speakers.
I look forward to this ERE conference. I hope that I will have a chance to meet many people and the tradition continues at this event.

Welcome to the Fall ERE Conference!!
tknoepke-campbell October 1, 2007 1:29 pm ET
I’m sure many of you are looking forward to attending the Fall ERE Expo in
Washington D.C. in a couple of weeks. For some of you, it may be the first time; for others, you may have attended before – in either case, if you are involved in recruitment, it definitely will be the place to be…
I have had the opportunity to meet some of you at previous conferences and hope to meet other new faces at the upcoming conference. In case you haven’t guessed yet, I have the honor of serving as the Chairperson of the event this fall. In my spare time, I am employed as the Director of Workforce Planning for HealthEast Care System in St Paul MN; an organization with 7,000 employees deep in the throes of recruiting and retaining a competent health care workforce.
In the past, some of the chairmen have been Dr John Sullivan, Gerry Crispin and Jeremy Eskenazi. While I have some pretty big shoes to fill, it’s exciting to be the first practitioner to serve in this role but I will need your help to make this an outstanding event.
I’ve recently had the opportunity to talk with most of the speakers and have been able to see their presentations. I know that you will come away with new information and many great ideas. You are encouraged to ask questions of the speakers either during their presentation or as you encounter them in the exhibit hall or the hospitality hours. This is your opportunity to get as much as you can from them.
The best advice I can give you to maximize this event is network, network, and network! Review the participants list prior to the conference and find out who you want to meet – maybe its someone in your industry, hopefully its not. Who do you want to steal ideas from (sorry I do it all the time and adapt to my needs) – now is your chance. Take advantage of the opportunity to meet these people and start a dialogue.
The same holds true for the vendors. You never know when you’re going to need some of the services that the vendors provide, so create those relationships in anticipation of this.
I do have to steal the idea/advice from Jeremy that he offered for the spring ERE. It’s so much easier to network and meet other people if you place your name tag on your right lapel. You shake hands with your right hand and it is then a natural movement to view a person’s nametag as you make eye contact – without looking at their midsection to see a nametag hanging from a lanyard. (Thanks, Jeremy)
Finally, be sure to bring your credit cards or your checkbook to participate in the silent auction. The proceeds go to the ERE Foundation which provides educational support to disadvantaged youth in the US and abroad. Some of the things you will be able to bid on are: iPhone, iPods, Digital Camera, Telephone Sourcing Learning Series, Exec Talent in Asia Conference and more. The top bid wins the prize (I won a conference located in
Hawaii last year – not bad)….
Take a minute and share any questions or comments that you have: what you are looking for from this conference, who would you like to meet – or what sites are you going to see in Washington. Looking forward to meeting everyone in a couple of weeks.
Trudy Knoepke-Campbell
ERE Conference Chairperson
Afternoon brainstorming session
Todd Raphael October 1, 2007 12:38 pm ET
Friday at 2 p.m. during the conference is the afternoon brainstorming session. We divide up into small groups to brainstorm challenges and solutions. Do you have thoughts on what roundtable topics we should have this year? Let me know. So far, roundtable topics are: recruiting veterans; employee referrals; the future of recruiting; and the state of the economy.

Six Sigma in Recruiting?
Jason Buss September 30, 2007 9:32 pm ET
I am presenting a session on Thursday afternoon in DC on Six Sigma and recruiting. Please send me your thoughts and experiences with process re-design in the recruiting space. I’d also be interested in hearing about any successes and challenges you’ve had with implementation, and change management with your Hiring Managers. Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks!
Pats’ Football
Todd Raphael September 28, 2007 2:27 pm ET
I hear Monster is going to donate an autographed Patriots football to the Foundation auction at the Expo — I bet it’ll be one of the hotter items (though Careerbuilder is donating a new Dell laptop, which would be pretty darn nice).
